Weekend Wrap #61: NFL Draft Edition

news_wrap.jpgI love the NFL Draft. I watch it start to finish every year and love to mentally critique if each pick was a good fit for that team’s needs, a reach or just a head scratcher. True to form, the Oakland Raiders never fail to disappoint in their questionable draft picks. Taking Darrius Heyward-Bey in the first round with the 7th overall pick had me, and everyone on TV, baffled. Projected as a late first rounder at best, Heyward-Bey was the first wide receiver taken while Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin and Percy Harvin and other more proven receivers were still available. But one thing holds true, Al Davis loves guys with speed and since Heyward-Bey had the fastest 40 time at the combine, that got Al’s juices flowing. Further confusing the draft experts was the Raiders selection of Michael Mitchell. Here is a guy that was projected as a 7th rounder or even a guy that was consider a priority undrafted free agent. And the Raiders not only burned a 2nd round pick on this guy, they traded up to get to him. Seriously, if there is a Raiders fan out there, please explain to me after all these losing seasons and their continuing to make a mockery of being in the league, how hard is it to remain a fan and satay optimistic you have a shot at winning? Oh well, the Raiders are entertaining if anything and will continue to stink up the league as long as Al Davis has any influence on the team. Now on with this week’s links.
