Google +1 Button Added

June 10, 2011 in Mailbag

Google +1 ButtonDespite the valiant efforts by Yahoo! and Bing with recent marketing campaigns, Google remains the 800 pound gorilla when it comes to search engines. Google recently came out with a new way to help others on the web find the stuff they are looking for. It is called Google +1 and the icon you will be seeing looks like this –

Most of us are familiar with the ‘like” button (also known as the thumbs up button) on Facebook. This +1 button appears to be Google’s answer to that. But instead of being confined just to content you see on Facebook, Google’s +1 button covers the entire internet. Take a look at this brief video on how Google +1 works.

If you are more of a reader than a video person, you can learn what Google +1 is all about by visiting Google.com/+1button.

So why on a tailgating blog are we telling you about a search engine widget with bells and whistles? The short answer comes down to shameless self-promotion.

We have added the Google +1 widget to our blog posts to make it easier on you, the visitor, to recommend a post to others. We’re not asking you to scour our entire website and click every +1 button you see. (Although that would be awesome if you did…) We’re just letting you know that if you do find something on here that is useful, there is an easy way for you to share it with other tailgaters like yourself. By doing that you are not only helping out other tailgaters seeking quality information and tailgating ideas but you are helping us out by sending us more visitors who may not have discovered this tailgating blog.

So if you have a free moment, go to Google.com and search for “Tailgating Ideas”. (Or you can just click HERE and we have done it for you.) TailgatingIdeas.com comes up as the first result. To the right of the website name you will see a little rectangle with +1 inside of it. It should be grey but will change to color once you mouse over it. Just click on it once and it should change to full color. You just gave TailgatingIdeas.com a +1 in Google and now others will see it too. It’s just that simple and should take you less than 10 seconds.

Special thanks goes out to Garry Conn for alerting me to this cool new feature on the web. Have fun with this and now go out there and recommend some cool web content to other people on the internet.

Google Suggest: How to Smoke…

April 3, 2010 in Uncategorized

No matter what anyone says, Google is still the 800 pound gorilla when it comes to searching the web. How do I know this? Because since opening this website in August 2007, Google has sent 79% of all search engine traffic. Yahoo and Bing and all the others can claim they are just as good as Google but until I start seeing the traffic numbers shift, Google will remain the king.

So why do I bring this up? I just wanted to share how I enjoy the functionality of Google Suggest but also how it sometimes makes me laugh. For example, this evening I was doing a little bit of research on smoking a rack of baby back ribs. Now that I have a Bubba Keg Griill and I use it quite often as a smoker and my wife suggested we (read that meaning I) smoke some ribs for Easter dinner. So I thought it might be nice to brush up on some smoking techniques that people are doing out there just to see if I wanted to try something different than the way I have been smoking ribs in the past. Naturally I went to Google first and was going to search on “How to smoke ribs”. But thanks to Google Suggest, smoking ribs was not even close to being one of the more popular searched upon topics. I grabbed a screen shot and thought I would share it.

google suggest

I was able to do some good research on smoking ribs but it still made me laugh how unpopular smoking turkey, salmon and ribs is compared to the other stuff. Happy Easter!

Happy Birthday TailgatingIdeas.com!

August 14, 2008 in Tailgating Ideas

It was one year ago, August 13, 2007, that TailgatingIdeas.com was born. This post, Tailgating Games to Play, starting it all off. Who knew this blog would grow into what it is today?

It has been a lot of hard work of late nights and long weekends trying to maintain this website but it has been a labor of love as well. Even though this blog is only a year old, let’s do some looking back to see where we have come from and where we are today.

In just one year, TailgatingIdeas.com has reeled in close to 117,000 hits and over 106,000 unique visitors. That translates to close to a quarter-million (249,249 to be exact) page views in just one year. It was slow going at first let me tell you. My first visitors started showing up on August 20, 2007 and that was after a full week of blogging. Still only 20 people showed up all day and it was probably because they found me by accident. My how things have changed. I am willing to bet that there are probably at least 20 people reading this same blog right now as you are reading it.

So after a year what do people find interesting to read on here? Naturally the home page was the most popular of places to visit but individual posts have gotten quite a few visitors as well. The most popular post to date has to be The 14 Tailgaters Who Annoy the Crap Out of You. That post has been viewed close to 27,000 times with half of that traffic coming by way of a link from Sports Illustrated’s Campus Clicks. (Thanks Mallory for the link.) The next most popular post had to be the Party-a-Cargo Tow Hitch Mounted Kegerator article I wrote. That post “went viral” and numerous gadget blogs and websites were linking to it. Jimmy Traina of Sports Illustrated Extra Mustard Hot Clicks also picked up on it and linked it. Rounding out the top eight most popular posts on TailgatingIdeas.com as judged by the sheer page views from you the readers are #4: Port-O-Pong Portable Beer Pong Table, #5; Gallery of Gabriella Fox, #6: The Bucket List For tailgaters, #7: Super Bowl Bans Tailgating and #8: Flip Cup Championship Comes to New York.

Most people use search engines to find the information they are looking for and tailgaters are no different. Boy have things changed in just a year when it comes to TailgatingIdeas.com’s search engine rankings. August 20, 2007 saw four visitors come in via Google. What a difference a year makes. August 6, 2008, Google brought in 836 visitors to Tailgating Ideas. A year ago, this blog was buried in the search engine results pages, relegated to page 16 for the terms “tailgating ideas” and page 37 for the term “tailgating”. Today this site ranks No. 1 on Google for the search term tailgating ideas and consistently ranks No. 2 or No. 3 (depending on the day) on Google for the term tailgating. Go ahead and call me a liar and check it for yourself.

So all in all it has been a very good year. I’d like to thank especially my advertisers who have been loyal and believed in this blog to be a valuable advertising venue. Make sure to visit Cornhole.com, How The Pros Play, FireWire Grilling Skewers, LadderGolf.com, SexyBeerBongs.com (NSFW) and LetsGoTailgating.com and let them know you appreciate them supporting TailgatingIdeas.com.

Here is to another year of TailgatingIdeas.com bringing you the most up to date tailgating tips, unique tailgating gear, great recipes, biting commentary and a little bit of humor. I hope you enjoyed reading it over the past year as much as I enjoyed creating it. If you have any suggestions as to how to make this blog better in the coming year, please leave a comment below.
