The T-Shirt Guy…or Gal

April 9, 2009 in Uncategorized

champion_tshirt.jpgMaybe this fan is cheap. Maybe I like a good bargain too much. But why do sporting good stores even bother selling jerseys or team themed t-shirts any more?

If you are on this site you are already going to the stadium to watch your favorite team play (if the economy has shrunk your ticket budget, well there is always e-bay). You are in the parking lot, you have your grills, your food, your beers, and your games. But what we also have is own personal traveling sporting goods store.

Yep, I am talking about the T-shirt guy (or gal) that is strolling through the parking lot with his (or her) garbage bag of shirts, hats, and pretty much anything else a fan might need to show their team support and hatred of the opposition.

The t-shirts (though I admit not always G-rated) have the catchiest slogans bashing the opposition or logos with cartoon characters defacing the opposition’s helmet. Admit it we all have at least 1 t-shirt with the guy peeing on your rival’s helmet or a slogan noting how much the rival sucks or how the players are blowing this and that.

Maybe the sun is too bright, no problem, the guy (or gal) also has shades and caps for the male or female fan. When the weather is too cold he (or she) of course has winter hats, gloves, and hand warmers…all for the low, low price of $5-$10. These are prices that would put even Wal-mart to shame.

The T-shirt guy (or gal) should be praised by all. Such creativity must have caused at least a few sleepless nights. He (or she) is providing us fans with a valuable service…on the cheap. But instead he lives in fear that his goods will soon be confiscated. Yes, I am aware that maybe the goods are “hot.” But hey in these tough economic times we all gotta make a living somehow even if it’s from a plastic bag!

Cue the theme music. So we salute you, Mr. T-shirt guy. Keep giving us those $5 t-shirts that of course only come in one size…too big!

(On a side note, the other night when the shirts did get confiscated, the cop was nice enough to give my buddies and I free t-shirts!)

Tailgate Barn T-shirts: Designed By Tailgaters For Tailgaters

October 16, 2008 in Tailgating Gear

Tailgating has a lifestyle and culture all its own. It’s hard to find T-shirts and apparel that are specifically designed around tailgating. Sure there are other T-shirts floating around that promote beer pong and flip cup but hardly do you see T-shirts about tailgating. That last statement was true until I found out about TailgateBarn.com.

The guys at Tailgate Barn were kind enough to send me a sample to check out for myself. I was pleasantly surprised to find out the shirt was a nice weight and thickness and was not too thin or flimsy. I hate shirts that are cheaply made and feel paper thin. These shirts were 100% cotton Fruit of the Loom shirts and fit well. Take a look at what I wore today.

Many of the shirt designs at Tailgate Barn come in a number of NCAA school colors including Iowa, Colorado, Iowa State, Michigan, Mississippi, Northwestern, LSU, Ohio State, Tennessee, UNI and Wisconsin. Of course if you are a fan of a different team not listed, you could fudge it a little and order your design in colors that are similar. A great example is that I tailgate at a lot of San Diego Chargers games. So the guys at Tailgate Barn sent me shirts that are from the Michigan selection because the colors are similar. I am sure fans of the Washington Huskies could order a shirt from the Northwestern selection and no one would know the difference. Fans of the Kansas City Chiefs would be best served shopping for shirts in the Iowa State section. Houston Texans tailgaters could order from the Mississippi area. You get the point.

A lot of the designs are rather clever and are specific to tailgating and traditional tailgating games and activities. Check them out and here are a few examples of the ones I thought were the most clever.

Tailgate Party T-Shirt Ideas

January 19, 2008 in Tailgating Gear

champion_tshirt.jpgYou always get the same question before heading out to go tailgating. “What should I wear to the tailgate party?” Here at Tailgating Ideas we are no Mr. Blackwell, but we have seen a few tailgating fashion do’s and don’ts in our time in the parking lots. Here are two easy tips based on the type of tailgating you will be doing.

1. If you are going to a game, wearing the gear of the home team is always a good call. You can never go wrong rocking the jersey of one of the two teams playing. If you are going to the Chargers vs. Patriots game, please leave the Green Bay Packers Brett Favre jersey in the closet. You’ll look like a tool. Trust us on this one.

2. If you are concert tailgating, wear a t-shirt of a band that is similar to the one you are seeing. Do not commit the faux pas of wearing the T-shirt of the exact same band you are going to see. To quote Jeremy Piven’s character, James “Droz” Andrews, in the movie PCU, “What is this? You’re gonna wear this to the show? You’re gonna wear the shirt of the band you’re gonna go see? Don’t be that guy.”

Let’s review, class… Sports tailgating – wear the jersey or T-shirt of one of the teams playing = Good. Concert tailgating – wear a T-shirt of the band playing = Bad. I don’t make the rules I am just here to inform you of them.

But what if you want to stand out and make a statement while tailgating? Just like every girl at her Senior prom, no one wants to show up to the dance wearing the same gown as someone else. We have scoured the internet and have compiled a few suggestions for tailgate T-shirt ideas you may enjoy. Be careful. If you offend easily, you may want to check out a different article.

If you like any of the shirts suggested here, click on any design to buy that shirt directly from the manufacturer.
