Power Hour Album by Ali Spagnola

October 7, 2011 in Featured, Tailgating Gear

Ali Spagnola Power Hour AlbumToday is Friday. (Not that I needed to tell you that because you probably already figured that out on your own.) The reason why I mention what day of the week it is is because across this great nation of ours on numerous college campuses, college students will probably be playing the drinking game “Power Hour” this evening. Some may even be so brave as to take the “Power Hour” outdoors and play it while tailgating on Saturday. For those that didn’t go to college or are unfamiliar with the game, here is how it works.

  • Grab a 6-pack of beer
  • Get a shot glass
  • Drink a shot of beer every minute
  • Lather, rinse repeat for an hour

If you are using 1 oz. shot glasses, that works out to be 60 oz of beer in an hour or the equivalent of a 6-pack. If you chose to use a 1.5 oz shot glass, it works out to be seven and a half beers in an hour. Either way, rather than just shotgunning six beers within an hour, the Power Hour makes it a little more fun and social. However there are some inherent pitfalls to playing the game (outside of the obvious binge drinking aspect) most notably someone has to keep track of the time. The most common way is to designate someone to be the time keeper and they have to keep an eye on the clock and alert everyone playing that another minute is upon them and to do a shot.

I have personally seen this done by a person blowing a whistle or trying to shout above the noise of the crowd. By the end of the hour, the time keeper’s voice is hoarse or completely gone or you are tired of hearing the whistle blow you are getting flashbacks to running grass drills in Pop Warner football. Thankfully there is a better way for those of you playing Power Hour to not only get everyone involved but eliminates the need to designate someone the time keeper and provides a soundtrack for your game. It is Ali Spagnola’s Power Hour Album. Take a look at this 30 second promo.

Ali Spagnola’s Power Hour Album is 60 songs and all are 60 seconds long. So when playing Power Hour, just hit play on the album and when the music changes, you take your shot. No more watching the clock. No more blowing whistles or noise makers. And no more yelling and screaming to alert everyone to take another shot.

The song you heard in that short promo is actually the first song that starts off the album and it really sets the tone for the remaining hour. There are a number of ways to get a hold of the Power Hour Album but probably the best and easiest way is to get the Shot Glass USB combo. What it is is a plastic shot glass attached to a lanyard that has a 1 GB USB flash drive on the bottom. The entire 60 song playlist is preloaded on the USB stick and comes along with other goodies like a bonus track, a promotional poster and in addition to MP3s, the USB comes loaded with AAC versions of all the songs as well. The USB stick is 1 GB of memory so you’ll also have about 600 MB of memory space unused that you can save photos or even your term papers on there. Simply remove the USB drive and insert it into your computer and the playlist should start playing automatically depending o your computer’s settings. If you want to play Power Hour while tailgating, all the songs are in an easily downloadable format that you can pull into your iTunes library or transfer over to your MP3 player.

Ali Spagnola Power Hour Shot Glass USB

(Disclaimer: We did receive a sample Power Hour Album Shot Glass USB for free. The fact this sample was provided to us in no way influenced our opinion of the product nor did it impact our ability to test and review the product fairly and objectively.)

We popped the USB into our computer and let it play for the entire hour. Although we do no claim to be music critics we liked the nice mix of musical tastes and genres as it shifted from song to song, minute by minute. Some of the songs’ lyrics are outright hilarious and I found myself listening to “It Sounds Like a Good Idea (But it’s not)” a few times. I also enjoyed “Drinking with a Helmet”, “Text Someone That’s Not Here” and “If You’re Wasted and You Know It” quite a bit. After all, the songs are short, upbeat and all are about drinking. You can see and hear all 60 songs in one easy to navigate menu HERE.

After listening to the Power Hour Album by Ali Spagnola we can say with confidence that is it “Tailgate Approved”. Just take the USB stick and drag the entire album into your iPod and create a Power Hour playlist and you are done. Bring your iPod tailgating and you can let everyone play Power Hour without having to designate or draw straws for who will be the dreaded time keeper.

There are a number of ways to get The Power Hour Album including but limited to the Shot Glass USB, on CD and via digital download on Amazon, Rhapsody and Napster.

Rolling with Snake Eyes Yard Dice

August 19, 2010 in Tailgating Games

I credit the folks over at Snake Eyes Yard Dice for taking a chance and letting the creative juices flow.  An idea so simple, to some may be odd, but with an end result of fun.

As with previous free product samples I was a bit skeptical when Dave approached me to review the Snake Eyes Yard Dice.  I quickly reviewed the product on their website and my initial thought was that the large dice looked kind of cool but how could they possibly be any fun for an adult?  Would my friends be cracking jokes instead of having a good time?  Well it turns out I was wrong once again (ask my wife and she will tell you that I am wrong all the time!).

So what is so great about the Snake Eyes Yard Dice?  Well for starters, the game comes in a cool little carrying sack.  The sack is an instant conversation starter when you arrive at the tailgate or BBQ or outdoor party.  This was the case for me this past Saturday when I brought the game to my buddy’s house for an afternoon / evening  BBQ in his back yard.

When you open the sack, you see six large wooden dice.  Your first question will be, “what am I supposed to do with these over-sized dice?”  That answer is simple because the Snake Eyes Yard Dice comes with a card listing the instructions / rules for 10 different games.  Note, some games are child friendly while others are best suited for an afternoon of drinking with the friends.

On Saturday we played two of the games, “Desperate to Drink” and “Sixes.”  To no one’s surpise each of these games were drinking games.  And no worries, the instructions are simple enough that as you continue to drink you will still remember how to play the game!

A quick summary of the “Desperate to Drink” game….

  • Grab 3 – 6 people.
  • Have each person select a different number between 1 -6.
  • Each person rolls a die until his / her number appears (with a maximum of 5 rolls).
  • When you roll your number you take a drink (we added the rule that the length of the drink is 5 times your number; if your number is 5 then you would drink for 25 seconds)
  • If after 5 rolls you don’t roll your number you get to make up a rule that the other players must follow for the remainder of the game.  The two rules that we came up with were that every time a six is rolled everyone playing the game drinks a beer for 30 seconds and every time a 1 is rolled the person to your right has to take a shot!

A quick summary of the “Sixes” game…

  • Line up 6 cups and number the cups.
  • Fill each of the 6 cups with beer.
  • Grab one of the dice.
  • Roll the dice and whatever number is rolled you drink from that numbered cup.
  • You continue rolling until you roll the number of an empty cup.  You then pass the die to the next person.

As you can see there are no true winners and losers in these games.  The Snake Eyes Yard Dice games just adds entertainment to an outside event.  The games are really not much different that your typical card drinking games, but the dice bring a new fun to an event.  You are enjoying the outdoors, sharing some laughs and a good buzz with good friends, and can use your imagination to think up your own dice games.

The only down side to Snake Eyes Yard Dice is that they are not really made for the tailgating parking lot.  The wooden dice are designed for grass. not concrete.  But as an added bonus, the dice can also be used to make decisions around the house.  When my wife and I are stuck on a decision (i.e. who has to do a certain chore) we grab a die and roll.  The one who rolls the lower number is the loser (unfortunately I have been washing a lot of dinner dishes lately)!

So if you are looking for a new type of fun (or another reason to drink on the weekends) at your next outdoor party I definitely recommend checking out the Snake Eyes Yard Dice website for additional product details, game ideas, and ordering information.

Mid-Week Eye Candy Wrapper #86: Jessica Burciaga Edition

April 22, 2010 in Babes, Mailbag

Today is Earth Day. Please reduce, reuse and recycle. Also, make sure you you check out Go Green Tailgate packs for a better way to tailgate eco-friendly. Now that we have that out of the way, today is also one of my favorite days of the year. The NFL Draft. The NFL has decided to mix things up a bit this year holding the first round of the draft on Thursday night in prime time. In years past the draft was Saturday and Sunday. But with the NFL being the 800-pound gorilla in the sporting universe and TV driving the bus on many decisions, they changed it because the draft has evolved into a TV event. No matter what they do to the NFL Draft, I love it none the less.

Forget the slogan “Hope and Change” that Obama paraded in front of the electorate in 2008. The NFL Draft encompasses Hope and Change for football fans. The hope comes into play that we all hope that our teams pick the player we think would be a good fit. If they don’t, we hope we are wrong and hope that the General Manager knows more than we do. The change comes in the form of these new players represent the future of the franchise. No NFL franchise opens a new season with the exact same players that were on the team the previous season. Free agency, players retiring, players get traded and cut all ensure that new players will make the new team. It is that constant turnover and change that makes NFL fans hopeful this will be their year. So with that in mind, why not offer up Jessica Burciaga in a Chicago Bears jersey to provide a little hope that your teams’ changes will be all good. Links to follow:
