Sta-Cold Cooler Giveaway Poll

November 26, 2011 in Featured, Tailgating Ideas

Earlier this week Brandon reviewed the Sta-Cold Cooler, a high-end cooler with a surprisingly affordable price. The folks at Sta-Cold were nice enough to offer us the opportunity to give away one of their coolers to one of our readers. To make it fair and to make sure the winner was truly deserving of a new cooler, we asked our readers to post a photo of their cooler they want to put out to pasture and replace with a new one. We chose the top three most deserving coolers and now it is up to you to vote on which one is the most deserving to be retired.

Here are the three finalists along with their owner’s comments on why they want a new cooler.

Cooler Number 1

Cooler 1

Cooler 1

This is my husband’s cooler. His parents use to take it to his soccer games, so it has to be 10-15 years old. The lid is broken and the water spigot does not fully close. So the ice does not last very long. He takes it every where he needs a cooler, mostly tailgates! Please help me get his old busted cooler replaced!!

Cooler Number 2

Cooler 2

Cooler 2

This is my old cooler. It has to be 20 years old. I couldn’t even tell you how many camping trips, tailgates, backyard bbq’s, etc. this thing has been to. You don’t even see metal latches like that any more. I need a new one because both of the handles have fallen off of it and the insulation has broken down a bit so it doesn’t stay as cold as it should! Thanks for all the awesome stuff you do Tailgatingideas!!!

Cooler Number 3

Cooler 3

Cooler 3

This is my old ice chest i bought when i was 20yrs old (13yrs ago). It has been on at least 30 lake trips, countless tailgates, spent enough time in baja to require its own green card, and has tranported more booze than Popcorn Sutton. Lid latch is broken and the handles have been broken and replaced with rope and bicycle handle grips. I would only retire her for a STA-Cold Cooler!

Now that you have seen the worst of the worst, it is up to you to decide which cooler deserves to be retired. Vote in our poll and based on the poll results will determine which cooler gets replaced with a brand new Sta-Cold Cooler. You can vote for any cooler you like and you can vote again every hour. You can also encourage your friends to vote as often as they like every hour as well.

Poll closes at 11:59 pm pacific time on Monday, November 28, 2011 so make sure to vote early and vote often. Good luck to all.

Featured Gear Friday: Tailgate Couch

November 25, 2011 in Featured, Tailgating Gear

Since starting this tailgating blog back in 2007, we have tested, tried and demonstrated a lot of tailgating gear and written a lot of tailgating product reviews. Some good and some bad. But because we are a blog, a great product we discovered two or three years ago may be lost in the tons of posts we have published after discovering it. Maybe you are a new reader and haven’t had the time to pour through every single post we have done in the past four years. So in order to help out the tailgaters that might not have read about some of these cool tailgating products, we will be doing a feature on products we reviewed a while ago. We call it Featured Gear Friday and this week’s product is: The Tailgate Couch.

Tailgate Couch HottiesTailgating is all about enjoying yourself away from home but with as many comforts of home as possible. Folding camping chairs are the standard when it comes to tailgate party seating but they are not super comfortable. Lugging your entire sofa set or your Barcalounger to the tailgating lot is unfeasible. They are too big, too heavy and too bulky. But now there is a way to be super comfortable while tailgating and all you need is a pick-up truck tailgate and the Tailgate Couch. (Click on any image for larger view.)

As you can see from the images below, the Tailgate Couch converts any full sized truck tailgate into a comfortable couch. I tested it out for myself and I found the Tailgate Couch to be very comfortable and heavy duty while being extremely lightweight and easy to set up. I am a pretty big dude weighing about 285 at the time the above photo was taken. You can see that the back of the Tailgate Couch easily supports my weight. My friend, whose truck we tested the Tailgate Couch out on, weighs in the 225 range. We both sat on the Tailgate Couch simultaneously and leaned back on the back of the couch. It supported both of our weight no problem. That’s over 500 pounds combined and the Tailgate Couch handled it flawlessly. So no worries if you normally tailgate with “Big Wally” who has a rib and doughnut eating fetish. The Tailgate Couch will probably be able to handle him too.

Another added benefit of the Tailgate Couch is that it is a chick magnet. Seriously, if given the choice of sitting on a hard metal tailgate or on the soft comfort of the Tailgate Couch, I am betting all the women will opt for choice No. 2. I hate to stereotype but I am willing to bet on this.

Before you discount the Tailgate Couch as a glorified futon cushion removed from the wooden frame, this item is specifically designed to fit on the tailgate of a pick-up truck. (The Tailgate Couch doesn’t fit “step side” or “flair side” models. If your tailgate is 5 feet wide, the Tailgate Couch will fit.) The cargo strap that is used while the unit is set up on tailgate is also used to secure the unit in the folded position for storage and transportation. The strap doubles as a handle to carry it to and from your tailgate. The Tailgate Couch will fold completely flat and can be used as a bed and fits between the wheel wells of a pickup truck bed. That’s good news for your overindulgent tailgating friends who may need a little nap time before kick-off if they hit the margaritas too hard.

Here are some other detailed specs:

  • The Tailgate Couch weighs less than 20 pounds.
  • The Tailgate Couch is washable. Just remove the foam cushions, hand wash using cold water and line dry.
  • The Tailgate Couch is made of durable materials for a long life.
  • The Tailgate Couch cover is made of a high quality nylon material that is both stain and water resistant. The same material used to make high quality backpacks.
  • Each cushion of the Tailgate Couch measures 22 inches by 30 inches with a 3 inch foam pad and 4 cushions per couch.
  • When folded into a cube for transportation/storage, the Tailgate Couch measures 22 inches x 30 inches x 12 inches.
  • The Tailgate Couch has a 1 year limited warranty.

You can buy your own Tailgate Couch directly from our online tailgating store, Shop.TailgatingIdeas.com. Price is $199.00 and that includes shipping to the continental United States via FedEx Ground. (Sorry Alaska and Hawaii, you’ll need to contact us for special shipping rates.) The Tailgate Couch comes in two styles, Green Camo with black trim or classic Red with white trim. Buy Tailgate Couch by clicking Here.

If you are still not convinced you should get a Tailgate Couch, listen to these 10 reasons from these tailgating girls. Their delivery may be a bit stiff but I’ll bet you’ll make it all the way through the 90 second clip.

Video: Deep Frying Turkey Dos & Don’ts

November 24, 2011 in Commentary, Videos

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Many Americans will deep fry a turkey this holiday and some will experience disastrous results. By disastrous results we don’t mean it will turn out dry or overcooked and your judgmental aunt will complain about it for the rest of the day. By disastrous we mean some will fail to read the directions and will start a huge grease fire that will burn down their house. Take a look at this video to see the right and wrong way of frying a turkey.

The major keys to take away from this video are:

  • Always thaw your turkey completely
  • Always make sure your turkey is dry before submerging it into the oil
  • Always slowly lower your turkey into the fryer to prevent the oil from spilling over
  • Make sure to have the proper level of oil in the pot. (You can do this by placing your turkey in the pot still in the bag and filling it with water. Remove the turkey and make note of where the water level is and duplicate that level when placing your oil in the pot.)
  • Always have a fire extinguisher nearby
  • If a fire does occur, never put water on a grease fire

Happy Thanksgiving all and enjoy the day.
