Featured Gear Friday: Washeroos

November 12, 2010 in Featured, Tailgating Games

Since starting this tailgating blog back in 2007, we have tested, tried and demonstrated a lot of tailgating gear and written a lot of tailgating product reviews. Some good and some bad. But because we are a blog, a great product we discovered two years ago may be lost in the tons of posts we have published after discovering it. Maybe you are a new reader and haven’t had the time to pour through every single post we have done in the past three years. So in order to help out the tailgaters that might not have read about some of these cool tailgating products, we will be doing a weekly feature on products we reviewed a while ago. We call it Featured Gear Friday and this week’s product is the tailgating game Washeroos.

Washeroos complete game

Looking for a little more bounce and play while playing washer toss? Washeroos is the answer. Washeroos is different than any other type of washers tailgate game in that it incorporates a suspended, bouncing rubber mat in it’s design. That means a washer that lands on the top of the mat can potentially be bounced in by the following washer. Very fun and provides for unpredictable games, comebacks and fantastic finishes.

You’ve seen cornhole, original washers, horseshoes, single hole washers, blong ball and all other types of tossing games while tailgating. I’ll bet you have never seen Washeroos. This new tailgating game is a lot like single hole washers with a twist, er, I should say ‘bounce’. Washeroos is different than any other type of washers tailgate game in that it incorporates a suspended, bouncing rubber mat in it’s design. That means a washer that lands on the top of the mat can potentially be bounced in by the following washer. Every washer tossed has the potential of falling in the hole. This makes for competitive games, great comebacks and thrilling finishes. We tested out Washeroos and here is our video review of the game:

The construction is top notch, made right here in the U.S.A. in Columbus, Ohio, and they are easy to transport and set up. They also take up less room than standard cornhole boards in your vehicle on the way to tailgate.

The basic rules and scoring are a bit different as well. The ultimate goal to winning is to score 21 points and win by two. A washer landing on the mat is one (1) point, a ‘leaner’, washer on the mat and hanging over the hole is two (2) points, and a ‘ringer’, falling into the hole onto the grass or asphalt is three (3) points. Scoring is all or nothing meaning only one player or team can score points per round. The player with the most points in each round adds that amount to their total score. The other player gets no points added to their total score. If the score happens to be tied in a round, it is considered a “push” and neither team receives any points.

You’ll notice that in the video that we took turn tossing our washers. That was done to demonstrate the way the Washeroos boards provide bounce and play during the game. (It would have been boring watching me miss all four of my washers in a row.) In a normal game, one player tosses all four of his/her washers, leaving them where they fall. The next player then tosses all four of their washers. Where the washers finally land after all players have taken their turn is where they are scored. washers may bounce off the grass or asphalt onto the unit, be knocked into the hole by another washer or opponent’s washer, get knocked off the board by a washer, etc. It really doesn’t matter how the washer gets there as long as the players toss their washers from 20 feet away. A complete list of rules for 2 player, 3 player and teams of two is included with each Washeroos game.

Gift Giving Guide: Tailgating Games

December 19, 2009 in Tailgating Games

We’re getting down to the nitty gritty when it comes to gift giving this holiday season. But there is still time to get the tailgater on your gift list a cool tailgating game. Might we suggest:

Pub WashersPub Washers – Pub Washers is a portable table top game made for indoor or outdoor play. Ideally suited for a tailgate party, Pub Washers is small enough to travel easily and is attractive enough for the home game room when your team is playing on the road. Unlike traditional washer toss games, Pub Washers is meant to be played on an elevated surface like a folding table or even the bed/tailgate of your truck. The carpeted scoring surface is encompassed by an attractive box with a trough to catch errant tosses which means there is no more bending down and picking up washers off of a filthy tailgating parking lot. When you purchase Pub Washers you’ll receive: One (1) Pub Washers game board, Six (6) steel washers, One (1) six inch (6″) wooden magnet, five (5) Pub Washer Golf score cards and complete rules for Pub Washers, Pub Washers Golf and the Skins game. Total price for the basic Pub Washers set is $125 plus $35 flat rate shipping to the 48 continental United States. (Alaska and Hawaii resident need to make special shipping arrangements.) The handmade wood scoring tower is optional and is an additional $15. You also can get powder coated washers in gloss black and white, three in each color, for an additional $9. If you would like the game board plus the powder coated washers and scoring tower, just select the Pub Washers “The Works” option below.

Weekend Wrap #63: Tailgating with Kids Edition

May 11, 2009 in Mailbag, Tailgating Ideas

So if you are one of the 344 people following me on Twitter you’ve already probably seen the accompanying photos. (Click on them for a larger view) If not, let me explain before we jump into this week’s links.

A great friend of mine from back in college, let’s call him Captain Dan, and I recently met up last month to tailgate for a fraternity reunion. Of course I dragged out all my tailgating gear and everyone had a great time. Captain Dan had such a good time he invited me to tag along this past Saturday. His son’s Little League team was invited to Angel Stadium to walk the field and take in the game later that night. He and the other parents wanted to make a great day of it, naturally, and planned to get there early and tailgate. Captain Dan calls me up knowing full well that I love to tailgate and offered to supply food and drink if I bring the Freedom Grill and a few more tailgating essentials. Sounds like a fair trade for me plus I would have shown up had he not offered to pick up the food and beverages. I love tailgating that much.

So I meet Dan and his family outside the stadium at a little past noon. Gates open at noon for a 6 pm first pitch. (Heeeeellllllllooooooooo? Are you listening San Diego Chargers? Apparently six hours of tailgating is not a big issue in Anaheim.) We set up all of our stuff and settled in for some awesome tailgating. This is where even a veteran tailgater like myself can learn something new.

I normally tailgate with adults so this was a new experience for me. Unpacking chairs, turning on music and just hanging out and talking for four hours while tailgating is the norm. That doesn’t fly when you are hosting a tailgate for a Little League team. This is where I learned that tailgating games might be even more essential than a grill or chairs. The attention span of an eight year-old is not that large so in order to combat boredom, games are the way to go. I’m so glad I brought the Beco Ball, Washeroos and the Sholf games. I didn’t have to break out the HillBilly Golf game because the other three games kept the kids occupied the entire time. Although I will admit that the bean bags for the Beco Ball game were used as baseballs for a pick-up streetball/stickball game with coolers and folded sweatshirts used as bases. Hey, it was a bunch of kids who play Little League. What would you expect? Two hand touch football?

The parents on the other hand were busy socializing and having a good time. The one “tailgating game” they did partake in was the Flabongo. That little number went over well and was quite popular all day. So all in all, it was good time had by all, parents and kids. So my advice to you is if you are tailgating with kids, bring the tailgating games. When you are working on your third Flabongo, you’ll thank me.

Now, on with this week’s links….
