Man Cave Worldwide Meats Review

April 28, 2011 in Featured, Tailgating Gear

ManCave CoastersBy now you’ve probably heard of the term “Man Cave”. If not, it is generally accepted to be “a room inside the house, such as the basement or garage or attic or office, or outside the house such as a wood shed or tool room, where “guys can do as they please” without fear of upsetting any female sensibility about house decor or design.” Although your tailgating space is not really part of the house it could be considered a “Man Cave” of sorts.

I was recently contacted by the folks at Man Cave Worldwide to sample and review some of their mail order meats. Never one to turn down an opportunity to grill up something new, I told them to bring it on. Within a few days an insulated box arrived via UPS and I opened it to find an assortment of burgers and brats inside.

Anytime something perishable like meats are shipped, I am always a little wary of the condition they will arrive in. After all, who knows how long it will take to arrive and you don’t want to be grilling up some meat that has been getting warm on a delivery truck for a few days. I was happy to find inside the box three types of brats and a few burgers. All were still frozen and no sign of spoilage. We were off to a good start already.

I allowed the meat samples to defrost completely in the fridge for a day or two and then was ready to try them out on the grill. The meats I was sent to sample and review were the BBQ Pulled Pork and Cheddar Burgers, Buffalo Bleu Cheese Brats, Black and Bleu Brats and the Tomato Basil Parmesan Brats. I fired up the Bubba Keg Grill, cracked open a Tailgate Beer and got myself ready to try something new.

Black and Bleu BratsI am not trying to play favorites here but I have to admit the Buffalo Bleu Cheese Brat was nothing short of outstanding. On their website they claim it is their best seller and now I know why. It had the flavor of buffalo wing sauce without being too hot and overpowering and the bleu cheese gave it that flavor of adding bleu cheese dressing when eating chicken wings. So imagine combining the flavors of Buffalo wings into a brat. Honestly it was a great combination of flavors.

I also liked the Black and Bleu Brat that combines real Stout beer and plenty of Bleu Cheese all in a brat. Again, a nice combination of manly flavors that were not overpowering yet were not too subdued. The BBQ Pulled Pork and Cheddar Burger was good and made me feel like I was having a pulled pork sandwich (always a tailgate favorite) with a cheese burger on top. The Tomato Basil Parmesan Brat was also a nice combo of flavors to round out the lot of meats.

After sampling the meats I naturally went to the web to do a little more investigation on what Man Cave Worldwide is all about and to see what other flavors of meats they offer. I was blown away at the large assortment of manly meats they offer including frog legs, bison burgers, steaks, chops, Chocolate Bacon, (You read that right. Bacon covered in chocolate) smoked turkey legs and even Breaded Bull Cojones! Yes, that is correct. Rocky Mountain Oysters.

Beer PagerUpon further discovery I found they also offer grilling tools, home bar accessories, spices, rubs and marinades and one of the coolest novelties I have seen, the Beer Pager. What it is is a beer koozie attached to a base that can alert you to where you last left your beer. Clicking the button on the remote device unleashes a series of belches and flashing lights from the base and you can search for your beer up to 60 feet away. Might not be a bad idea to get a few for your tailgating kit as well as for your home.

Lastly, I found the true genius of Man Cave Worldwide in what they call “Meatings”. Women for years have been having what is now called “Home Parties”. Made popular by the Tupperware brand, home parties have typically appealed to women. Products such as perfume, handbags, food storage, cosmetics and even erotic toys have been sold and marketed this way. Up until now, men had no outlet to have a home party of their own. That is what Man Cave Worldwide is doing. Offering up a home party atmosphere that brings guys together and the products offered are grilling tools, meats and other gadgets that guys would want. Take a look at their video.

Sounds kind of cool, right? If you are interested, check out their information page on becoming an advisor and hosting your own “meatings”.

As for the meats I was sent to review, I would definitely recommend trying them for your next tailgate. They offer over 30 varieties of brats along with other types of meats so you are bound to find something that you will like. Most of the brats come five to a package and cost around $9.00. Spud Spikes

April 4, 2011 in Featured, Tailgating Gear

Spud Spikes LogoTailgaters know that tailgating parking lots are not open as long as they used to be. Tailgating time is getting shorter and shorter which places the pressure on those of us who want to squeeze just as much fun into less time. In order to do that we are then faced with the hard decisions of what to cook and serve in the parking lot based on how much time we have to do it in. Many times tailgaters will choose to serve foods that are faster and easier to make to cut down on cooking times.

Baked potatoes on the grill are awesome while tailgating and compliment almost any dish. The problem with potatoes is that they take a long time to cook on a grill; typically about an hour. I recently discovered Spud Spikes. Simply put, they are are 5 1/2″ long No. 316 food-grade stainless steel nails that will cut your cooking time on a potato in half.

When I received my sample of Spud Spikes I was a bit skeptical at first. When doing research on Spud Spikes and cooking nails in general, I learned that the exposed ends of the nail will heat up and thus conduct the heat inward to the center of the potato. It makes sense that this would help the potato cook from the inside out and not rely solely on the heat of the grill to cook the potato from the outside in. This dual cooking technique would cut the baking time in half because the potato is receiving heat both internally and externally and thus cooking twice as fast. Twice as fast equals really good in the tailgating parking lot especially if you arrived late or your team’s parking lot is not open for an extended amount of time.

As I mentioned, I was sent a sample of Spud Spikes to try out for myself. My test was pretty simple in that I inserted a Spud Spike into one potato while leaving the other one alone. I even chose to use the Spud Spike on the potato that was slightly larger so that there would be no mistaking if the cooking time was indeed shortened by using it. I placed both potatoes on my Bubba Keg Grill at home along with some corn on the cob and some chicken breasts that would later be added to the grilling party.

After about 35 minutes of the potatoes being on the grill, the chicken and corn were ready to come off. Typically 35 minutes would not be an adequate amount of time to thoroughly bake a potato on the grill but I wanted to see if the Spud Spike claims were in fact correct. Much to my surprise, the potato with the Spud Spikes, despite being a little larger than the other, was cooked all the way through and was piping hot. The other potato was cooked about 2/3rds of the way through and the middle was still hard and cool to the touch. From that comparison alone I was convinced that using the Spud Spike definitely made a difference and reduced the cooking time significantly.

Using the Spud Spike to cut down on cooking time got me to thinking that they could be used on other foods to reduce cooking time. Brats and sausages seemed to be a good fit since they are long and would fit along a Spud Spike. No longer do you have to boil your brats at home and cook them off on the grill when you get to the lot. By using a Spud Spike you can make sure the centers of the brats are thoroughly cooked all the way through. Food safety is very important when tailgating and you don’t want to leave the game early because you ate an undercooked brat.

After using the Spud Spikes it occurred to me that not only did they save time but will save on your fuel costs as well. If you don’t have to run your propane grill for an entire hour to bake potatoes, that’s just more fuel you’ll be saving for next time you go tailgating. And with gasoline prices sky high again, that has affected the cost of propane as well. (Stay tuned for an upcoming commentary later this week regarding using propane during this recent spike in gas prices.)

Prior to writing up this review I discussed the success I had experienced when using the Spud Spikes. One friend of mine said, “Big deal. I have a box full of galvanized and aluminum nails in my tool box. I am sure they are cheaper than what the Spud Spikes cost.”

He was right. A box of nails at Home Depot would be cheaper but I am not sure you would want to put the same type of nail in your potato that you would use to hammer a two by four. A little bit of research revealed that aluminum nails tend to leave unattractive black marks on the potatoes. Also, aluminum nails are not as strong and sturdy compared to the Spud Spikes and do not puncture the potato as well. Using an aluminum nail to pierce the potato, the nail could bend and not puncture all the way through.

For less than $25 you can buy eight Spud Spikes that also come in a storage bag. If you live in
the lower 48 states, shipping is free.

Grill-O-Sheet

December 1, 2010 in Featured, Tailgating Gear

As tailgaters we love grilling. No matter if you are at home or in the parking lot, there is just something special about preparing meals on the open flame. But because grilling usually involves grill grates, some foods are typically left off for fear of sticking or falling through. Fish, veggies and other delicate foods tend to scare off tailgaters from grilling them. I’ve seen tailgaters cook these items on aluminum foil placed directly on the grill rods but when it comes time to turn them, the foil normally tears because it is so flimsy. I was recently sent a sample of the Grill-O-Sheet, a reusable grill topper made of durable aluminum, designed to prevent delicate foods and lean meats from sticking or falling through the grill grates.

As you can see in the above photo, the Grill-O-Sheet is laid right on top of your existing grill grates and the holes allow for the heat and flame to get to your food. Because it is made out of aluminum, it is flexible but because it is about four times the thickness of aluminum foil it is sturdy and durable. And because it is made out of aluminum, it is recyclable too for all you “green” tailgaters out there. The good thing is you won’t have to recycle it after a single use. You can wash the Grill-O-Sheet by hand or place it in the dishwasher. Just make sure to let it cool down first before handling.

I was sent two samples of the Grill-O-Sheet to test out on my own. I received the regular Grill-O-Sheet which fits your standard rectangle shaped BBQ grills. I also tested the Grill-O-Sheet Jr. which is smaller but made to fit on portable tailgating grills. No matter what size you get, you can always cut the sheet to size using regular scissors to make it fit on your grill. If you have a round grill, (I used the Bubba Keg Grill to test this aspect) you can either use the Grill-O-Sheet Jr or if you want “wall-to-wall” coverage, just cut the regular size into a circle. I also found that you can wrap fish with the Grill-O-Sheet making a sleeve for the fish in order to grill it. Just simply turn over the pocket that holds the fish and you still get grilled fish without “baking” it on the grill had you wrapped it in regular kitchen foil.

The Grill-O-Sheet is available in a number of retailers including Whole Foods, Lowe’s, Mill’s Fleet Farm and of course Amazon. For a complete list of retailers where you can buy the Grill-O-Sheet, visit their listing of retailers. Prices may vary depending on the retailer but a quick look at Amazon show a package of 10 Grill-O-Sheets is priced at $19.99.
