Duke Tailgating Grill

Posted by Dave On September - 21 - 2010

The photos of custom tailgating grills keep coming in. This most recent one comes in from a college where you know they can play basketball but are not that well known for their football. But believe me, Duke University’s football team may not be a traditional powerhouse but the people in Durham do know how to tailgate. Take a look at this Duke tailgating grill and then read the email from the owner, Patrice.

And here is her email to me telling me how she got such a unique look.

Hi Dave – here’s a photo of our Margaritaville grill customized with Duke colors and insignia. The graphic on the condiment tray is a silhouette of the top of Duke Chapel, a campus landmark. I first painted the center of the tray a slightly lighter shade of blue. After that layer was mostly dry, I stuck a plastic stencil of the chapel outline to the paint – it adhered just enough to stay in place – then did the finish painting with the darker blue and a metallic layer (it’s Krylon glitter paint). Finally, I carefully pulled off the stencil and sprayed a layer of satin polyurethane over everything – it helps the glitter stay put.

We got a lot of admiring looks and comments for the grill during our tailgate yesterday. (Duke lost to Alabama badly, but we had fun anyway!) My husband was happy not to have to figure out how to fit a grill inside our 2-door Tahoe with all the other paraphernalia we carry – stowage in a 2-door is surprisingly limited with the spare tire taking up a lot of room! The grills work really well, don’t they? We cooked thick ribeyes and they came out great!

Thanks for posting the customizing instructions – knowing how to remove the various grill parts before we started was a huge help.

I hope your Chargers put a hurtin’ the Jags today!
