top 10 trophyWith new year’s eve rapidly approaching it seems as if everyone is looking back and reflecting on the past year. If you can’t beat ‘em then join ‘em is how the old saying goes.

2010 was a rather good year for TailgatingIdeas.com. We opened the year by attending and appearing as a guest panelist at the Sports Licensing and Tailgate Show in January. We also added two new contributors to the TailgatingIdeas.com family, welcoming in Foster “Jim” Flint and Mary B. Clark into the fold. Throughout the year we gained new visitors from such big name websites like Sports Illustrated, hit the front page of Digg.com in July, also we were featured in other high profile blogs and message boards. Also in July we opened up Shop.TailgatingIdeas.com, our tailgating gear store that organized and made finding those tailgating items that you normally can’t find in big box stores easier to find and easier to buy. In August we celebrated our three year anniversary of blogging on tailgating and the tailgate party lifestyle virtually thumbing our noses at the critics and detractors that said a blog dedicated to tailgating would not work.

All in all, 2010 was a great year for the expansion and reach of this tailgating website but it would not have been possible without all of you reading this right now. With that said, we would like to say thank you for reading and visiting. If you are a regular, thank you for your loyalty and we hope we have provided you with some outstanding tailgating ideas over the past year. If you are brand new, welcome and we hope you bookmark us and return frequently. So without further delay, let’s take a look back at which posts were the most viewed and read by you the visitors.

My Pole-ish Horseshoes10) My Pole-ish Horseshoes – Back in March we discovered this new tailgating game that has more popularity on the eastern seaboard compared to the west coast. By taking the game of polish horseshoes and improving on it to give it a wider base that does not tip over easily and also breaks down and transports easily to a tailgate party it is no wonder this post was one of our most popular in 2010.

9) The REAL Top 10 College Football Tailgates of 2010 – Some sports blogger decided to put together a list prior to the start of the 2010 college football season stating which games would expect to have the best tailgating prior to kick off. It was a nice list but basically read as if it were a college game preview of which games looked on paper to be great match-ups. Real tailgaters understand that a perceived good game on the field does not always translate into a great tailgate. So we decided to make our own list taking into account start times, rivalry aspects, tradition and just overall tailgating enthusiasm at that particular institution and compiled our own list. This post became quite popular as other sports blogs and messages boards referred to it and thus sent quite a large number of visitors our way.

8) Winegard Carryout: Portable Satellite Antenna Review – Normally a product review does not gain popularity to the point it breaks the Top 10 of most read post in a particular year but Foster Flint’s review of this product was the exception to the rule. Apparently there are a ton of people out there thirsty for knowledge on a quality and reputable portable satellite system for tailgating. Judging by the number of visitors coming in to read this review, apparently they got what they wanted.

New York Yankees Tailgating Grill7) New York Yankees Tailgating Grill – It’s no secret that since customizing our first Margaritaville Tailgating Grill to San Diego Chargers colors and theme we have done other teams since. With all due respect to the other team grills we have customized over the years, the New York Yankees grill we completed in April was probably the most impressive of them all. What made this grill stand out was the attention to detail we put into this grill all the way down to the authentic pinstripes. The pinstripes on this grill were the exact color and width of a Yankee pinstripe you find on their uniforms. On top of that the spacing between the pinstripes was the exact width you would find on Derek Jeter’s uniform. As you can imagine we proudly posted up photos of this grill and numerous Yankees fan message boards and forums immediately linked to it making it our No. 7 most read post in 2010.

6) $5 To Walk & Tailgate? – In one of the more outrageous tailgating stories of 2010 comes this one surrounding pedestrian tailgaters in Cleveland. Apparently the operator of one of the popular tailgating lots near the Browns’ stadium thought it would be a good idea to charge people $5 just to walk into the parking lot and join friends who were already parked. As you can imagine this caused an uproar and this story was getting national coverage. We’re proud to say we were one of the first ones outside of the local Cleveland area to report on this and subsequently this post was picked up by larger media outlets like Sports Illustrated and Fox Sports.

5) Help Make Cornholing An Olympic Sport – It was just a simple YouTube video made by the guy over at Brotherhood of Bags encouraging the International Olympic Committee to add the game of Cornhole to the list of officially recognized sports. Well, apparently many of you within the tailgating community agreed making this our fifth most popular post in 2010.

Cleveland Muni Lot4) Cleveland Muni Lot Outrage & Petition – All in all, 2010 was not the best year for the people and fans of Cleveland. LeBron James announced on national TV he was abandoning the city to take his talents to Miami, the Indians finished out of the baseball playoffs again and the Browns still have a long way to go before they are a viable team for the NFL postseason. What Cleveland fans do have going for them is the tailgating…. up until this year.

2010 marked the year that the famous Muni Lot not only raised the parking fees but reduced tailgating times by over 30%. Instead of opening the gates at 4 am it was announced that Muni Lot gates would not open until 7 am. As you can imagine, this outraged Browns tailgaters and they responded in kind. They immediately started a petition and organized their own civil disobedience that would make Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr proud. Reports of tailgaters lining up at the gates at 4 am and waiting for three hours for them to open caused massive traffic congestion and potential accidents that the police ended up opening up the gates at 6 am in order to protect public safety.

3) Stocking Stuffer Ideas – Always around the holidays we hear people complain that they never can find good stocking stuffer ideas that are small and inexpensive enough to give to the tailgater on their list. So we decided to put together a gift suggestion list that fit the bill that also would appeal to tailgaters. Judging by the number of Bottle Cap Caddies and Shotgun Party Openers sold, this post most definitely ranks No. 3 in popularity in 2010.

Tow Hitch Stripper Pole bikini girl2) Tow Hitch Stripper Pole – What do you get when you combine a hot girl in a bikini hanging off a stripper pole demonstrating one of the most unique tailgating items to come on the market in recent years? You get the Tow Hitch Stripper Pole and that translates into thousands and thousands of visitors.

1) Holiday Gift Guide 2010 – Just like our Stocking Stuffer post that became quite popular, many of you were looking for that perfect gift for the tailgater on your shopping list. We compiled this list of items that included the Clear View LPG Tank, Drill Blender and the Pole Caddy among other cool tailgating gear. This post was the most popular one of all of 2010 despite being posted in the month of December when others had an entire year to reel in as many eyeballs.

So there are the top 10 most popular posts that were published on TailgatingIdeas.com in 2010 based on total number of visitors and page views. Did you have a favorite that didn’t crack the top 10 but is worth mentioning? Leave a comment below and let us know which one was your favorite.

Happy New Year and here’s wishing all of you tailgaters out there a happy, safe and prosperous 2011!

2010 Tailgating Predictions Revisited

December 29, 2010 in Featured

crystal Ball mediumEarly in January of this year I put together a Predictions On Tailgating for 2010 post trying my hand at predicting the future. So as 2010 comes to a close in less than a week I thought it might be fun to take a look back and see how well we did at predicting the future.

PREDICTION NO. 1Tailgating times will get smaller and restrictions will grow.

Verdict = True
Probably the biggest and most controversial proofs of this prediction came in Cleveland this year. The famed Muni Lot in Cleveland has been home to some of the most famous and infamous tailgate parties for decades. Browns fans get there early to get their favorite spot and even though the team has been a disappointment more than it has been a city treasure, the tailgaters in the Muni Lot revel in the fellowship and atmosphere that is pre-gaming before a Browns game. The Muni Lot gates would open at 4 am and many Browns tailgaters would be there waiting for the gates to open. This year, sadly, Cleveland announced the gates to the Muni Lot would open at 7 am and on top of that the parking fees would be going up. Yup, you guessed it…. they claimed the fee hike was to cover rising costs in providing services; services that were now being provided for three less hours. The Browns fans were so outraged they even started a petition to get the Muni Lot to reopen at 4 am to avoid traffic congestion and basically to allow the fans to enjoy the tailgating longer.

Another example of how this prediction came true was the New Tailgating Rules For College World Series. No longer could you save spots for friends or even pick your spot where you wanted to park. CWS tailgaters were directed to areas of the parking lot by staff and lot attendants. Another example would be “Pinto Ron”, the famous Buffalo Bills tailgater was told by the league he could no longer hold his rowdy and sometimes irreverent style tailgate party in the Bills parking lot. Upon threatening to move his party across the street, the Bills management asked him to stay but told him he needed to tone it down including not offering shots of liquor out of the thumb hole of his famous bowling ball.

Tow Hitch Stripper Pole bikini girlPREDICTION NO. 2More tailgating products will be introduced utilizing the 2″ tow hitch.

Verdict = True
As much as we tailgaters love to party in the parking lots, gear manufacturers love to produce goods that use the tow hitch receiver on the backs of our vehicles. In 2010 we discovered more tailgating gear designed for use in the 2″ tow hitch including the Tow Hitch Stripper Pole, the Auto-mo-brella and the Fan E Flag just to name a few.These products were added to the long list of already existing tailgating gear such as grills, flagpoles, tables and shelter that already used the 2″ tow hitch.

PREDICTION NO. 3Struggling college football programs will make tailgating more enticing in order to attract more fans to the games.

Verdict = True
We saw it in 2009 with Baylor offering tailgaters increased parking lot amenities like electricity and cable TV. Coincidentally their football team was invited to a Bowl game in 2010 for the first time in a long time. We’re not sure if they are related, but tailgaters should take the credit for the team’s turnaround. 2010 saw more football programs embrace tailgating as a viable and desirable asset to a positive college football experience. UC Davis started test driving limited tailgating to see what kind of a response they would get. Georgia State just started up their football program from scratch but the university and alumni embraced tailgating outside of the Georgia Dome as a regular part of the game day experience.

binge drinkingPREDICTION NO. 4More tailgating games will come out that target binge drinkers.

Verdict = Neutral
There’s always going to be binge drinking games that target tailgaters but I did not see an inordinate amount of products introduced in 2010 that targeting the binge drinking tailgaters of the world. So because there was no increase nor decrease this comes out a neutral score.

PREDICTION NO. 5Companies will introduce products that are specific to tailgating and not just products that can also be used for camping, fishing and other outdoor activities.

Verdict = Neutral
In today’s down economy, companies are trying to market to whatever demographic will buy the most of their product. We did see some products that were far and away aimed at tailgating but they also had other functions. For example, the RACC is clearly a tailgating canopy that extends off the rear of your vehicle making it ideal for tailgating. That said, it could also be used to go fishing and camping or at a picnic in the park if you can park close enough. There are other examples out there but we did not see a ton of products that only had tailgating uses and were not versatile enough to be used elsewhere.

PREDICTION NO. 6Major Fortune 500 companies will target the tailgating consumer with expensive ad campaigns.

Verdict = True
2009 proved to be the year that Madison Avenue embraced tailgating as a viable way to market and sell products. That trend continued in 2010 although new companies jumped in with both feet this year. Most notably was Ford Motor Company with their BCS Tailgate campaign. Ford advertised heavily the opportunity to enter and win a tricked out Ford F-150 complete with a pull out grill and folding flat screen TVs along with tickets to all four BCS Bowl Games. Kingsford Charcoal teamed up with sports programming monolith ESPN to present “Tailgate Week” which encouraged fans to tailgate in their backyard even if they didn’t have tickets to the game. Clearly these companies are attempting to tap into the popularity and appeal of tailgating beyond just the hardcore few that do it week in and week out in the stadium parking lots.

Dodgers SuckPREDICTION NO. 7One NFL Stadium will ban any consumption of alcohol in the parking lots after an ugly incident covered in the media occurs.

Verdict = True… sort of
Instead of saying “NFL Stadium” I should have just said “sports stadium” and I would have nailed this one too. If you recall, I stated that this was a prediction that was going out on a limb and I was hoping I was dead wrong on. Unfortunately I was right on this one although it happened in Major League Baseball and not in the NFL.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have completely banned tailgating altogether and this policy was implemented on opening day. Not only was tailgating banned but LAPD Officers were issuing tickets for those who lingered too long near their cars after parking.

Although tailgating was not banned at an NFL stadium this year, it was severely limited and restricted down in Houston. Following some ugly alcohol soaked fights between Texans and Cowboys fans showing up on YouTube and local TV stations, the Houston Texans management decided to restrict tailgating to those who had tickets to the day’s game and also issued tailgating passes. Tailgaters without a ticket and without a tailgate pass were not permitted to enter the parking lots at all. So although there was not a complete and total ban on tailgating at an NFL stadium, an ugly incident that occurred in the parking lot severely changed the landscape of how tailgating was treated moving forward.

After taking a look at how we fared on predicting the future, I think we went 5-0-2. Now if only I could have that kind of success rate on predicting college football games against the Vegas spread I might have a career in sports betting. But then again, I think I will stick to tailgating predictions where losing my life saving is not in jeopardy.

Bring on the Snow

December 26, 2010 in Uncategorized

As an NFL fan I was becoming very jealous of the Chicago, Minnesota, and and New England football fans.

No, the jealousy had nothing to do with Super Bowl trophies!  Instead the jealousy had everything to do with their recent football weather.  Over the past month each of the teams and their fans had the opportunity to tailgate, watch the game, and play the game in snow.

The highlights from each of the games looked pretty freaking awesome to this fan.  Tailgaters were gathered around large fires, fans were throwing snowballs to celebrate touchdowns, and players were slip-sliding across snow covered fields.  To this fan these are all signs of true and absolutely perfect football.  I wanted what they had…and I almost got it.  Almost…

It was almost the perfect Christmas.  The presents were perfect, the dinner and dessert feasts were plenty, and the weather forecast was dreamy.  The day after Christmas called for snow in the Philadelphia area.  The initial forecast was for 4-6 inches of snow.  I would be like a kid on Christmas morning the day after Christmas.

Unfortunately the ultimate present was not meant to be.  As the evening progressed and the evening turned to morning the weather forecast just kept getting worse.  The predictions for snow accumulation and wind speeds just kept increasing all the way to blizzard conditions.  But being a football tailgater and fan I wasn’t ready to just give up.  Seeing the recent conditions for games in Chicago, New England, and Minnesota I thought there was no way that the game gets cancelled.

So being the ultimate optimist I woke up early and packed up the truck with the tailgating gear to get a head start on my trip down to PA and then off to the parking lots of Lincoln Financial field.  Thoughts of grills cooking, fires flaming, and snowballs flying filled my head as I began my journey.  Inside the car the blasting of AC/DC only heightened my already perfect mood.  BUT…

Then the phone rang.  On the other end was Dad with the news that the Sunday Night Game was postponed to a freaking Tuesday night.  Ugh, a work night when getting down to the stadium early enough for a kick-ass tailgate would be difficult.  I was so unbelievably bummed.  But…

As I mentioned I am the ultimate optimist.  So even with the current situation being described as  a “Debbie Downer” I was hit with a brilliant idea.  The day after Christmas miracle…

That’s right, do a parking lot tailgate right at home.  And that tailgate will be beginning in less than 40 minutes.  The grill is set-up on the back porch, the snow is falling, a few friends are over, and the big screen TV is all set for the 4 o’clock kick-offs.  Yes, it’s not Chicago at the stadium football and tailgating but at least there will be no traffic or traffic accidents after the game.  And if one of friends pisses me off or the fantasy team under performs there will be plenty of snowballs to throw (hey, I am from Philadelphia, it’s what we do!).

Merry Day after Christmas.  For some of us this might just be the best day of the weekend!
